Bone Grafting

After a tooth extraction, the socket will fill with blood and form a clot.  Over the next few months the socket will fill with bone.  During this healing process there may be some collapsing of the socket which may cause narrowing of the ridge. If implants are planned then bone grafting may be helpful at the time of the extraction. In an attempt to preserve bone for future implant placement either human or bovine bone can be placed into the socket. After a healing period of 3-4 months the area is then re-evaluated for implant placement.

In some cases patients may present with bone loss do to missing teeth. More extensive bone grafting may be required to reconstruct the area. Following the procedure you will be prescribed pain medication and possibly an antibiotic. Dr. Pandolfi  will discuss all your options during your consultation appointment.
