Wisdom Teeth
Wisdom teeth or third molars are the last molars to erupt into your mouth. This usually occurs during the late teens or early twenties. Sometimes these teeth will come in straight and become useful, however, most often this does not occur. Usually these teeth are misaligned and have the potential to cause future problems. These problems include infections, gum disease, cysts and damage to surrounding teeth.
Wisdom teeth are best removed as a young adult to optimize healing and prevent future complications to the remaining teeth. Removal of misaligned wisdom teeth may also lead to overall better health.
The procedure usually lasts 45 minutes to 1 hour. Anesthesia options can range from local to general anesthesia. During your consultation, Dr. Pandolfi will discuss the procedure, risks, and anesthesia options. You will also be given pre and post-operative instructions.
You will be given a prescription for pain medication and possibly an antibiotic. There will be a recovery period after surgery so discuss with Dr. Pandolfi any activities you are involved in which may interfer with this process. We recommend you plan to take enough time off for rest and recovery.
